Our orchard will be serving up soft fruits this summer after volunteers planted the new fruit bed this weekend (30th April).
Last year orchard volunteers prepared the bed which was treated with manure to create a fertile plot in a sunny spot, now it hosts strawberry, blueberry, currant, gooseberry and raspberry plants, alongside Jostaberry (a blackcurrant/gooseberry hybrid), rhubarb and, shortly, grape.
An assortment of varieties were planted, which in time will give visitors a chance to sample the different flavour profiles of the fruits.
Around a dozen volunteers turned out, weeding the bed and planting the fruits in just over an hour, earning a cup of tea and some homemade lemon and ginger biscuits at the end.
“Our thanks to the volunteers who turned out, once again proving that many hands make light work – we look forward to literally enjoying the fruits of our labour later this year” said Crosstown Community Orchard chairman Adam Keppel-Green.
A volunteer work session is held in the orchard on the last Sunday of each month from 10am to 12pm. The next takes place on Sunday 28th May where the top jobs will be weeding the trees and cleaning the benches. Next Monday the orchard is hosting 2nd Knutsford Scouts for the Coronation Big Help Out.
