Community Orchards are being introduced in communities across the UK and provide a local community with an open resource and access to fresh fruit. Community Orchards are now commonly included in new housing development proposals (both the Parkgate Lane and Northwich Road developments sites will include a community orchard) and in some areas they are being introduced to regenerate existing open spaces.
But why should only the new housing estates get such wonderful open spaces? That is the thought behind establishing a new orchard for Knutsford on an existing underused open space.
The Crosstown Community Orchard will be created on the public open space which falls from Mobberley Road down towards the railway line. The aim is to regenerate the space into a haven for wildlife and a relaxing place to visit all year round – with the added bonus of delicious fresh fruit every harvest season.
The land is owned by Cheshire East Council which has given its permission for the orchard to be created. A charity has been created (Crosstown Community Orchard) to take on the management and secure funding to create the orchard.
