On Sunday (22nd November) we launched ourselves to the community as we installed our ‘coming soon’ banner at the site.
Over the last month we’ve been doing a great deal of work shaping up our initial plans for the site and recruiting new trustees. In November we welcomed Cllr Lesley Dalzell as Knutsford Town Council’s appointed representative and Joanna Moonan and Laura Chandler who both live adjacent to the site on Mallard Close.
Kevin and Malcolm have been obtaining expert advice from the Cheshire Wildlife Trust and the head gardener at Tatton Park. Armed with this we have been putting together a tree plan – we think we will be able to plant around 50 fruit trees which with luck will fruit their first year!
We are also keen to manage the site as a haven for wildlife – developing the grass under the trees to meadow, planting additional trees/shrubs near the railway line to provide habitats and food and installing bird and bat boxes to provide homes!
We are hoping to agree a masterplan and map for the orchard which we’ll publish in due course. Over the next few months you should really see it begin to take shape as we aim to plant in January/February!
